CSA Detroit is open to Detroit metro region artists including Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties. Artists are encouraged to submit proposals based on artwork they are already creating, but with consideration for the format of the program.
Selected artists will create 50 “shares” for the program. Typical shares will consist of a physical work of art or object of artistic production; multiples are encouraged. However creative ideas that translate your work into a “shares” format or connect to themes like sustainability, farming, environmental issues or food (including food security and food justice issues) also are welcome. Some examples include: a limited edition of vinyl 7-inch record, a series of small tea cups, ceramic vessels, a run of photographs, letterpress editions of a poem or short story, tickets to an upcoming performance or event, a run of screen-prints or even 50 small original paintings. Collaborations between artists or work by collectives also are permitted.
CSA applicants should consider how you could fit what you do into a 18″ x 12″ x 12″ (L x W x H) box. If you usually make large-scale or complex work (including paintings, installation and sculpture), think about how you could get a sample of your work into a collector’s hands.
Not everyone is an object maker. If you work in performance, film, sound, installation, etc., consider how you can format what you do into a commissioned object for collectors. Musicians might want to consider producing a limited edition recording, or filmmakers a unique DVD (limited edition packaging, graphics, extra content). If your work is ephemeral, think about how to get it to your audience and vice versa.
Keep in mind that this is a commission for unique artworks. The stipend is not intended for the purchase of 50 commercial products already for sale or in mass production.
Participating artists will need to consider the delivery of their shares. You will need to wrap/box/pad the individual shares to protect them, if your objects are fragile.
