We’ve all seen them. Eyes that barely glance up from peering into the screen of their iPhone as they stand in line at a locally-owned coffee shop. From behind square tortoise frames, they look up only long enough to hand the barista their credit card after reciting an order that is just the right amount of classic, mixed with just enough pizazz. They either find a table near the window, where they can see and be seen, or all the way in the back where one might categorize them as a social rebel. iPhone still in hand, they place their leather briefcase, usually vintage, on the chair across from the one they sit in. A few sips of coffee is proceeded by a swift retrieval of their macbook from its leather home. Fifteen Clicks and a few scrolls later a tragedy occurs. Their laptop battery has died, and there isn’t a free outlet in sight. They mutter a silent expletive, more for principle rather than actual discouragement, and plunge once more into the leather bag. This time, retrieving an iPad and returning once again to their own little world. A friend approaches them, and taps them on the shoulder (Taps, nudges, and pats are acceptable substitutions for vocal greetings when approaching state of the art headphone users). After chit-chatting for a few minutes, the visitor lifts the Canon 5D camera that hangs from a strap around their neck and snaps a flick. They both take a few minutes to review the shot, and after laughing at some inside joke, the visitor departs.

They are the young and hip. They value technology, friends, social settings, and doing things in a new way. They are innovative yet appreciate tradition, antiques, and collectibles. Art? Of course they’re into art. Some of their best friends are artists, and they love the free wine at swanky arts events in the city! Do they buy art? Of course they do! Have you seen the $5 Picasso reprints they’ve found at the Salvation Army? Let’s face it, purchasing good art might not be at the top of their priority lists, but supporting their communities and being the first to join an innovative movement is!

CSA Detroit welcomes the young and hip. Get together with some friends and split a share!

1 Share split 3 ways : $116.67 per person

1 Share split 2 ways: $175.00 per person

Invite as many people as you want to own part of your share! Once you’ve figured it out, submit one payment of $350 to us here>> Buy a share today!

Shareholders will have the pleasure of attending 3 pick-up events to collect their 9 works of original art. Each pick-up event will feature 3 of our 9 artists. As a shareholder, you will have an opportunity to meet with the artists, hear about their work and get to know them.

Our May group will offer a paper helmet, a music box and a necklace. Read the story of each artist’s plan:

Have you ever worn something out in public that made a statement? Did it make people uncomfortable or did it create conversation? Fiber and performance artist, Jessica Frelinghuysen, has created a series of Paper Helmets that consist of a flat fine-art print which can be constructed and worn in awkward social situations to help the wearer navigate their environment.

Example: The shareholder will receive the flat art print along with instructions on construction to create a unique navigator of your environment.

Buy a share today!

*****************************************************************

A music box is a pleasing object to many. You open the lid to reveal the beautiful sounds of a song. Wesley Taylor and collaborator, Invincible, have created a music box that plays “Apple Orchards”, performed by Invincible and produced by Waajeed.

The music box that Wesley has created does much more than play this amazing original song for the shareholder. When the box is opened, it will project an LED light and shadow show that will depict the story of the lyrics.

Buy a share today!

*********************************************************************

When one hears of another car being broken into, one is reminded, yet again, that nothing can be protected every moment. Emily Linn and her collaborator, Alana Bartol, have found a new meaning for the piles of glass that come from the breakins. Through collecting, washing, sorting and then felting a protective cover, Detroit Diamonds represent many aspects of life: the crime, the hope that is revealed when the dirt and grime are washed away, the comfort that we find from a soft cloth wrapped around these jewels, the need for so many to find that comfort. These pieces that come from broken car windows in Detroit are diamonds in the rough.

These “city diamonds”, as this glass is sometimes referred to, become art in various forms. The shareholder will own a piece of this ongoing project in the form of a necklace along with a map locating where this glass was collected.

The necklace will be a reminder of the city and all of its aspects.

Buy a share today!

Welcome to Kingswood -Designs for the Kingswood Welcoming Committee Uniforms

Kingswood Lower Gallery: April 2-27, 2012, M-F 8am-5pm

What would it be like to be greeted everyday by a welcoming committee when you entered Kingswood? Fiber and performance artist, Jessica Frelinghuysen, CAA ’06, challenged Cranbrook Kingswood weaving students to design their quintessential Kingswood Welcoming Uniform prompted by Jessica’s work. The results were compiled and constructed by Jessica for Kingswood and are now on display in the Kingswood Lower Gallery. The Welcoming Committee performances will take place later this month.

Shares for our inaugural season of Community Supported Art: Detroit go on sale next week, Monday, March 19, 2012 at 10AM.

We now know the nine artists who are participating in this first season of CSA: Alyssa Baron-Klask, Carrie Dickason, Ismael Duran, Jessica Frelinghuysen, Sean Hages, Emily Linn (with collaborator Alana Bartol), Stacey Malasky (with collaborator Alana Bartol), Wesley Taylor (with collaborator Invincible), and Elizabeth Wight.

With Community Supported Agriculture, the model on which this artistic version is based, the shareholder receives a crate filled with locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs etc. You may find, in that box, a food item that you have never tried before. Maybe you’ll receive recipes that utilize the contents of the box. In that same spirit, Community Supported Art may offer you an opportunity to explore areas of artistic expression with which you are not familiar. You may even be invited to participate in an artistic venture yourself!

Community Supported Art: an adventure in art.

Only 50 shares will be sold. Each share will cost $350. For that $350 the shareholder will receive 9 pieces of locally produced original/limited edition artwork. Shares go on sale at 10AM on Monday, March 19, 2012. Share sale ends April 20, 2012.

CSA: support local artists in the creation of new work, begin or expand your own art collection, and help build an engaged arts community.

Stay tuned for more information on purchasing a share.

ArtServe Michigan is pleased to announce the featured artists for the inaugural season of Community Supported Art: Detroit.

The artists are: Alyssa Baron-Klask, Carrie Dickason, Ismael Duran, Jessica Frelinghuysen, Sean Hages, Emily Linn (with collaborator Alana Bartol), Stacey Malasky (with collaborator Patrick Crouch), Wesley Taylor (with collaborator Invincible), Elizabeth Wight.

CSA Detroit featured artists are selected on a competitive basis and the participants in this inaugural edition were selected out of nighty-nine applications by a jury of local artists and arts professionals. ArtServe Michigan would like to thank Mira Burack (visual arts), Vievee Francis (literary arts), Joel Peterson (music) and Lynn Crawford (literary arts/visual arts) for their expertise as jurors for this first edition.

The nine artists will create 50 artworks or “shares,” produced with a $1,000 stipend from the program. Consumers will be able to purchase a “share” for $350 for the season and receive 3 “farm boxes” of locally produced artwork once per month in the April through June 2012 timeframe.

Through the CSA program we are seeking to support artists in the creation of new work and build an engaged community of local arts supporters who can discover new artists from multiple disciplines. Shares will go on sale at 10 AM March 19 so stay tuned for more information about buying a share as well as features and profiles on our artists.
